Miami Fl Fishing Report Wahoo

Miami Fl Fishing Report Wahoo are on the reef.  Every summer the waters off Miami Beach warm up and the Little Tunny Tuna’s make their migration to the north.  The reef comes alive with all sorts andMiami Fl Fishing Report Wahoo - Capt. Jay's Deep Sea Fishing Miami sizes of the tropical tunas.  Right behind them are the larger predators.  Big “Summer Kings” kingfish, Great Barracuda & the king off catches the Wahoo all come out of the deeper water and follow the tunas on the deep reef off Miami & Miami Beach.

Miami Fl Fishing Report Wahoo on the Reef

We find Wahoo just off shore of the deep reef all summer.  Look in water as shallow as 80 foot and as deep as 600 foot, although were ever the Tunas are is where you will find the wahoo.  To target the Wahoo we will fish with larger double hooked Ballyhoo, Mullet, and fresh Bonita Strips fished deep on planners. We also pull the same baits rigged as “swimmers” on the surface.  Drone spoons in the 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 size also work well fished deep on a planner. Trolling at about 7 knots is effective for us.

Tackle from 30 lb to 80 pound will get the job done. We fish Penn International 30’s with 30 pound line and Penn 30 wide reels with 50 pound line.  Leaders in the 80 to 100 pound works well, and include a short piece of #7 or #8 wire.  Wahoo have super powerful jaws and incredibly sharp teeth.  They can strike a bait at 60+ miles per hour, and take a blistering first run.  We use hooks from 7/0 to 10/0 and a good ball bearing swivel is essential.  Once you hook up,make sure you keep the boat in gear and making way.  That will keep your Wahoo under control and heading towards the boat.  Most pelagic game fish after the first run can be lead by the boat.  stay in gear and a head of the fish.  When you get the Wahoo where you can grab the leader, the boat going a head will keep the Wahoo swimming with you.  That will keep the fish under controll so you can get that perfect gaff shot, and land that fish of a life time! Ok, thats our Miami Fl Fishing Report Wahoo for the week.
